With many volunteer opportunities to choose from, students practiced good deeds throughout the entire summer. Building charitable values and characteristics is an important part of being a panther. Through acts of service you can learn to communicate, lead, and work as a team for the benefit of the greater good.

The Walk for Hope took place on August 7, at Saginaw Valley State University. The Walk for Hope, Depression, and Suicide Awareness is a great opportunity to honor those who have struggled with, or  lost to mental health issues. There was a strong team of Nouvel students and alumni that voluntarily walked for past Nouvel student and friend Jacob Jurgens, or “JJ”. Jacob passed away on September 28, 2021, at the age of 19. It was a  great chance for family and friends to remember JJ and walk in his honor. You can support this cause by walking, volunteering, or donating to the Barb Smith Suicide Resource & Response Network’s.

Another service organization, committed to strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the community, is the Bridge the Gap Organization. Bridge the Gap has formed a connection to Nouvel through senior, Ayiteh Sowah. Ayiteh is an active volunteer and the Sowah family is responsible for founding the organization. Bridge the Gap provides fun and safe events, that can strengthen the relationship of the community and law enforcement. This summer they hosted an array of events, usually involving fun, food, and music. The first event was a golf tournament, on July 23. The second event was their Havana, Nights on the Bay event, which occurred on August 26. Their most often event is the Feed the City event. This took place in Saginaw, on August 28; in Midland, on August 30; and in Bay City on September 11. Junior, Brandon Murphy stated his personal favorite event is the Feed the City Event and said, “The best part is seeing all of the happy faces.”

Don’t forget to put yourself out there and volunteer for causes you care about!
