Lent: A Season of Grace

Julia Haddad ’24

Staff Writer

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It’s a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter and a time to reflect on Jesus’s sacrifice and to prepare our hearts. The three pillars of Lent are: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, fasting rules allow Catholics to eat only one full meal and two smaller meals which, combined, would not equal a single normal meal. Additionally, Catholics may not eat meat on these two days or on any Friday during the 40 days of Lent. The idea is to consider giving up something you love for Jesus, because he gave his life for us. It is meant to be a season of grace.

Here are some things that some students are giving up…

Ava Trevino: candy

Julia Haddad: hot showers

Brandon Murphy: sugary drinks

Amira Haddad: pasta

Audrey Hirschman: Starbucks
