It’s the start of a new school year, which means fall sports are underway. For the volleyball team, this means a long season with many Saturday invitational tournaments. Coaches Colleen Clevenger and Jordan Krakowski have been hard at work since early August to shape the girls into a strong team. There are 7 returning players from last year, 5 of whom are seniors. The team is led by senior captains Cara Jacobs, Nicole Buckingham and Liz Long. Despite a rocky start, the team has high hopes for the rest of the season. “We are working hard to find a rotation that works for us” says senior Cara Jacobs. Filling the void that some of the previous seniors left was also stated as a focus. They received their first win Tuesday against Caro, but suffered tough losses to Dow and a Sacred Heart on Thursday. Their next match-up is Sept. 16 vs. Bay City Western.

The Girl’s Golf team is 3-2 this year and off to a great start.  This is Mrs. Yats fourth year coaching the team and they are constantly getting better.  When asked about the team, Lilly Radke states, “We are growing and have a lot of freshman on the team.”  Mary McCarthy holds the teams number one spot and is very talented.  Her best score for nine holes this season is a 44. The team has strong players.  The top player on the boy’s golf team, Nick Ludka, went to a practice at Swan Valley Golf Course to give the girls some tips. Everyone is very thankful to use Swan Valley as their home course.  Nouvel took 19th at the Patriot Invite on September 11th led by Mary McCarthy (100) and with strong showings by Larissa Butko (117)Ellie Hirschman (119) and Sierra Reitz (125).

The boys tennis team has played in 4 matches this year. They have played in 2 tournaments, and two duals. The tournaments were at St. Johns and Fowlerville. There was some very good competition at these tournaments, but the boys fought and did very well. They beat St. Johns 8-3, which was a huge win for the team. The number one doubles team consists of Stone Kelly and Taehlor Rapin, who won the tournament and are currently undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record. At the Fowlerville tournament, the team came in fourth place overall. Once again, Stone and Taehlor won the number one doubles at this tournament. When the team took on Frankenmuth in the dual, Jackson Stuart and Grant Hoffman both won their games. Jackson is the number one singles player, and Grant is the number three singles player. The other dual the team took on was at Sandusky. Both Jack Stuart and Grant Hoffman won again, and two of the doubles teams won. Taehlor Rapin and Stone Kelly won number one doubles, and the other doubles team made up of Patrick Shabluk and Stan Rokita won number two doubles. The team is getting better every week, and is excited for the rest of the season.

The Cross Country Team has been training for this season since mid-August. While they have only had about three meets this season so far the Cross Country team has been successful. Captains his year are seniors Emily Mann and Marissa Beckman. Their most recent meet was last weekend in Midland, with one medalist, Meghan Matekel, who finished in 6th place. Emily Mann took 26th place out of 115 runners. While they didn’t score as a team, several members ran some of their best times and have been improving with each meet. There are also some new members to the team including Joe Moskal and Megan Fettig.

The soccer team has had five games so far with a record of 1-4. The one win is against SASA and the losses are against Hemlock, Ovid-Elsie, Swan Valley, and Almont.  One game was cancelled against New Haven for an unknown reason. They are young squad with four freshman and four sophomores. Logan Troester is the leading scorer with three goals and helps keep the team momentum flowing. Captains; Phil Rangitsch, Logan Troester, and Trevor Byers also work to keep the team uplifted with a positive outlook on the rest of the season. They have an invitational at Freeland on Saturday, September 13 starting at 10 a.m.  The team is pumped to keep going strong the rest of their season.

After a tough start to the season, the Panthers finally hit their stride Friday night with a 42-0 victory over Chatham-Kent. Junior quarterback Mitch Morley threw for three touchdown passes to bring the season’s record to 1-2.  While the season began with two challenging games, they were two eye-openers, and two reasons to watch the Panthers battle back at the rest of the season to prove who they really are.

As we talked to the running back for the Panthers, the 5’11, 190 lbs, dynamic driving force behind the line of scrimmage, the senior, Brad Dey. Brad Dey told us what is possible to expect for the rest of the season “There’s going to be a lot of adversity, but if we can really come together as a team and as a brotherhood, then anything is possible”.  Not only is he the driving force for the team while he has a football in his hands, he leads the team with confidence and positive attitude, as well as wearing the big “C” on his jersey along with the other senior captain, Khristian Goode.
