Video Game Spotlight: Sonic Robo Blast 2
|By B. Barlow (’25)
For the second video game spotlight, a fan game will be shown off. Specifically the Sonic fan game, Sonic Robot Blast 2. It has actually been in development for decades, it technically still is in development but it has as many zones as a classic Sonic game and ends with a pretty okay final boss for now. Its built off the DOOM game engine to allow the 3D effect. It is very easy to add mods to and I highly recommend it as they are safe to get and easy to install. By default the game already has quite a few playable characters Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails the Fox, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Fang the Sniper and Metal Sonic, each playing in wildly different ways. The zones are very open and have a ton of branching paths, and are open enough that you can go insanely fast easier than in most other Sonic games. I personally got mods right off the bat, mostly just character mods and quality of life mods. The game has very fun special stages, they are heavily based on the game “Nights into Dreams” another old Sega game. Normally I am disappointed by Sonic special stages but this game is an exception. The record attack mode is quite fun. as some characters have really fun movement abilities like Metal Sonic’s hover or Fang’s constant hopping. The main part I dislike is some of the bosses are really annoying and can be insanely hard with both base game characters and modded characters. The Castle Eggman Zone’s boss was the hardest overall. In general the game is a pretty nice difficulty between being decently challenging while not feeling unfair. Overall, I would definitely recommend it since it is free due to being a fan game.
