Thanksgiving Traditions

It’s that time of year where many families come together to give thanks. These families have traditions that they celebrate on this holiday. Here are some Thanksgiving traditions that some families at Nouvel partake in.

My Thanksgiving traditions are fairly common. We always go out to eat at a brunch buffet with all of my family that lives in town. Afterwards, everyone comes back to my house. We usually eat lots of desserts including pies, cookies, ice cream, and cake. We also play a game of “Disney: Scene it?” with teams always being kids against adults. The adults usually win. The last tradition that my family has is sitting down later at night to watch a movie.

Kylie Spear ’23 and Arielle Spear ’25 have some unique Thanksgiving traditions. They cook all of the organs of the Turkey: heart, liver, etc.. Then, every person in their family who is at dinner has to try a piece of every organ that was cooked They also have a baked bean competition. Every family member that is participating has to make baked beans using their great grandfather’s recipe, and the one that tastes the best wins. The last unique tradition that they have is someone hiding a pickle somewhere in the house and the rest of the people have to go and find it.

The Rishmawi family of Nouvel partake in some special Thanksgiving traditions. For food, they always make warwak dawali. This dish is olive leaves wrapped around rice and meat. They also make kousa along with it. Kousa is squash that is stuffed with rice and meat and usually served with tomato sauce. They also have relatives over and they listen to Arabic music for most of the day.

More common Thanksgiving traditions are celebrated by the McDonald triplets. They have a big dinner consisting of turkey, mash potatoes, a variety of vegetables, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. After they eat, they always sit down and watch the Lion’s football game as a family.
