This is a recap of the school shooting that took place on 14 February 2018. Around 2:21 p.m. the shooter entered the school and pulled the fire alarm, when the students left the classrooms the shooter began to open fire. The former high school student killed 17 people and injured at least 14, students and staff included. The principle stated, “This has been a day where we’ve seen the worst of humanity. Tomorrow is gonna bring out the best in humanity, as we come together to move forward from this unspeakable tragedy.”

After the tragedy occurred, the students came together to demand a change. They were able to plan two events; the National School Walkout on March 14 and the March for Our Lives on March 24. A student survivor had this to say, “We’re marching because it’s not just schools. It’s movie theaters, it’s concerts, it’s nightclubs. This kind of stuff can’t just happen. You know, we are marching for our lives, we’re marching for the 17 lives we lost. And we’re marching for our children’s lives and our children’s children and their children.” Both the events will be focused on calling Congress to act on gun violence. Throughout the following weeks, speeches by students who survived the shooting took place and went viral around the Nation. This horrific event has effected many children’s lives and they are refusing to put up with it any longer.

It’s typical after mass shootings for there to be renewed calls for action around guns and gun violence, but it seems to go nowhere. These students and families are hoping that with their actions, it will be different this time.
