Back-to-school means back to fall sports as well!  For the Nouvel Girl’s Swim Team, this meant begining their season mid-August and practicing for the fall season ever since.  The girls meet regularly at Heritage High School their ‘home’ pool.  They are working hard with their coach, Coach Beno Sharper, as well as with one another in order to perform well at their events.  In the second meet which was September 8, the girls lost to Oscoda.  In addition,  the girls swam their most recent meet last Thursday (9/10) against Heritage and Flint Powers at Heritage High School and unfortunatley lost.  The season is young!

On the team are students from both Nouvel and SASA.  The Nouvel seniors are Claire Krajkowski, Mariah Lalonde, and Zoila Ontiveros.  Claire Krajkowski has commented that “many swimmers have improved” and the seniors are all hopeful that they will have a successful remainder of their season until swim ends sometime in October.

The 2015 boys’ varsity soccer team led by coach Ellis kicked off their season on August 21, 2015 taking on the dragons of SASA. They are a very young team with no seniors, however, have many new comers with the ambition to learn the game and continue to get better. The team is lead by the three junior captains Will Jarema, Palo Diola, and Garret Marino. So far this year they have taken on SASA, John Glen, Ithaca, Elk Rapids, Carmen- Ainsworth, Alma, and Garber. Both Jonah wolinski and Bailey Bivins have scored one goal a piece this year. Unfortunately, they have yet to win a game but they continue to grow and improve as a team. Sophomore Will Jarema says “We have been a bit down the first handful of games but i believe we will get through it as we continue to improve overall as a team”. The boys have upcoming home games Semptember 11th and 18th versus BC Western and Mt. Pleasant. Come out and support the boys!

This year, the Nouvel golf team is more determined and focused than ever working on their road to states.  “We are doing much better than our previous season and are improving every day,” says senior golfer, Maya Brennan.    Sophomores Lorissa Butko and Sierra Reitz have continued to be at the top of their game and the team has high hopes for their success at states.  At the Garber tournament on Tuesday September 1, the girls placed second out of three teams, beating John Glenn, but losing to Garber by only two strokes.  Thursday, September 3, the team was ready to win an invite at Frankenmuth, but unfortunately around the sixth hole the game got rained out and the girls were unable to continue.  Coach Deb Yats is preparing the girls for their next match on Monday at Valley Lutheran’s golf course where they look forward to get another win.

Nouvel’s cross country team is off to a strong start this season. The team has had four meets so far this year. Both Meghan Matekel and Matt Bartels have received medals this year during their meets. In the teams last meet on Wednesday, 9/9, at the Marauder Invite, Donovan Gomez ran his season best with a time of 19:18. As each meet goes by, everyone on the team is improving their times. Their next meet is Thursday, 9/17, at Chesaning. The team is looking to build on their strong start this season. Good luck to the cross country team!

The football team had a rough start this year, losing their opener 21-48 to New Lothrop. They won their second game on a forfeit from Sarnia St. Patricks due to a labor strike by their teachers. In week three, the Panthers won their home opener against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 30-18 with a kick return touchdown from Jason Russel ’16, two touchdowns from Cameron Fluder ’16 and a pick six interception from Alex Dwan ’17. This next week the panthers have a schedule change where they will be home against Muskegon Heights Academy who are 1-1 for the season due to a mutual forfeit after there was a shooting at Muskegon Heights Academy.
