October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Now that October is here once again, everyone is getting excited for Halloween and fall festivities. Although all of this is fun, we need to remember another important aspect of October; Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Most people are aware of breast cancer, however, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. About 1 in 8 US women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. In addition, about 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

Here at Nouvel, some of our sports teams held “Game to Remember” nights to help raise money for Breast Cancer. The Varsity Football Game to Remember took place on Friday September 5th; however, was postponed until Saturday September 6th, due to heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. The Panthers put up a good fight against the Cougars of Lansing Catholic Central, but suffered a loss of 7-35. For the game, players put pink stickers on their helmets, with names of those with cancer, some also wore pink tape and pink socks for the occasion. Money raised that night added up to about $2300, all to donate for breast cancer awareness.

As for the Volleyball teams, their pink out games took place on Thursday October 2nd, both JV and Varsity took on the Warriors of Bay City Western. JV beat the warriors, in the end, winning two of three games; however, playing a fourth just for fun. Varsity played very well, but in the end lost their three of five sets only by a couple of points. Through contests, bake sales, and donations, Nouvel Volleyball managed to raise over $1000.00 for Breast Cancer Awareness. Also, this Friday at our last home football game the student section will be throwing pink flour for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
