Top 5/Worst 5 Christmas Songs

Top 5

1. Happy Xmas [War is Over] (John Lennon) – I wish that John Lennon wasn’t shot and was still alive today so at Christmas specials he could perform this holiday classic. Everything about the song is amazing: the Harlem Community Choir, the melody, the bass line, and the lyrics. The song campaigns Lennon’s and Yoko Ono’s quest for peace on earth and it is a timeless classic that ring to our ears today.

2. Where Are You Christmas? (Faith Hill) – All you have to listen to is the hour long intro and you will instantly fall in love with it. Faith Hill’s vocals only add to the amazingness of the song. This is a newer song and will be a Christmas classic for years to come. The song complements the comedy behind How the Grinch Stole Christmas (P.S. Shout out to Matt King’s crush Cindy Lou Who.)

3. The Christmas Shoes (NewSong) – When you hear this song in the car someone usually says “this song is so beautiful” or “oh turn this off I don’t want to listen to it.” This song is sad but it teaches us one of the best lessons of all during the Christmas season, which is to be generous. Like it or not, this song deserves the recognition it gets.

4. Snoopy’s Christmas (The Royal Guardsmen) – I believe this is the best song inspired by an animated special and it was better than “The Chipmunk Song.” I just love the story in the song and how it was inspired by everyone’s favorite Peanuts character – Snoopy. Plus, it was the best Christmas song the Peanuts ever did (listen to “Christmas Time Is Here”.)

5. White Christmas (Bing Crosby) – This song is on the list because it has been a holiday classic since it is the best-selling single of all time, with more than 50 million copies worldwide. The slow paced melody and Bing Crosby’s deep voice make this song a Christmas treat.

Worst 5

1. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer (Elmo and Patsy) – I hope the person who decided to put this song on the air is out of a job. Nothing about this song is interesting. The vocals are awful and the concept of the song was unsuccessful. I hope grandma did not live to hear this awful excuse for a song.

2. Here Comes Santa Claus (Gene Autry) – This is the most awkward Christmas song I have ever listened to. If you listen to it you will think that the fast lyrics do not match the song. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel anxious when this song airs.

3. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (Andy Williams) – Maybe, but hearing the title of the song in the song over and over shows the lack of effort put into it by Andy Williams.

4. Jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms) – To be honest, I believe that the cast of Mean Girls sang this song better than Bobby Helms. I am not a fan of how the song changes constantly and just not a fan of the song overall.

5. Feliz Navidad (Jose Feliciano) – I respect the Hispanic community for trying to get into the Christmas spirit but this song is sickening. It is the repetition that makes the song a bad work, and I do not understand what the true lyrics are.
