Tackling Tuition

How much do you value your education? Many parents would say that a good education is priceless. Here at Nouvel, paying for a good education is not a foreign concept. For the past few years, tuition has been constant in Saginaw Area Catholic Schools due to the tough economy. Starting with the 2013-2014 school year, full tuition for one year of high school at Nouvel will be raised from $5900 to $6500. Additionally, the percentage of income for those that cannot afford full tuition is being raised. Families that send one of their children to one of the SACS schools will pay 5.5% of their total income with a 0.5% increase for each additional child.

Due to the decreasing enrollment and size of parishes, it was necessary to raise tuition for all Saginaw Area Catholic Schools. Eventually, once each of the schools obtains stability, SACS hopes to give our committed teachers raises. “The rise in tuition is primarily meant to compensate for the decreased revenue coming in,” says Mr. Hoving. “At the onset of the raise, ” he says, “enrollment will be stable and will tend to decrease at the normal rate (5% a year).”

Although times are tough, Mr. Hoving along with the SACS school board sees that families are persevering and many more are now paying full tuition. To put the tuition raise into perspective, compared to other schools with the same athletic and academic abilities, Nouvel’s tuition is very affordable. Tuition here is lower than it is at Flint Powers or other metropolitan private schools. “I can sympathize with all of the parents since my own children go to St. Thomas,” says Mr. Hoving.

With his first year as the principal of Nouvel coming to a close,  Mr. Hoving only had positive things to say. “I’ve absolutely loved my first year here as I have enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I look forward, hopefully, to many more years!”

Thanks for a great year Mr. Hoving! See you next year!
