On Monday, January 23rd the Senior AP & CP English classes took a trip to the Zekelman Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Since the beginning of the second semester, the seniors have been reading the novel, NightNight tells the story of Eliezer Wiesel, a studious Orthodox Jewish teenager living in Hungary in the early 1940’s who is sent to Auschwitz, a concentration camp. In Auschwitz, Eliezer struggles to maintain his faith, bearing witness as his circumstances cause him to question both his faith and humanity.

At the museum, the seniors looked more closely into what concentration camps were like in more detail and learn how and why the Holocaust began. The seniors also got to listen to a second-generation Holocaust speaker. Gail Offen, daughter of author and Holocaust survivor and author, Sam Offen, had a powerful story to share with our students.

Senior Max Novak said, “The field trip was very sad but interesting to learn more about the experiences of what the Jews went through, it was fascinating to hear the second-generation Holocaust survivor speak about her dad’s experiences about what he went through at the concentration camp.”
