The Future of SACS

Recently, a meeting was held introducing five separate proposals discussing the different options for the future of Saginaw Area Catholic Schools. One of the five proposals that captured everyone’s attention suggests combing the two remaining feeder schools, St. Thomas and St. Stephen. With some parents rooting for and against the merger, some are wondering what the faculty think about the subject, such as the principal of Nouvel. Earlier last week, John Hoving shared some of his goals and opinions on the overall future of SACS and, more specifically, of Nouvel. Mr. Hoving says, “I would like to see us focusing on sharing the great things with the elementary kids that we have here at Nouvel”. Hoving also went on to discuss the importance of really focusing on Nouvel and all of the passionate and dedicated families we have. Lastly, Hoving mentioned that these passionate and dedicated families who strive for a Catholic education for their children are continuing to make Nouvel the best it has been in 30 years.

Although no final decision has been made on which proposal will best suit the situation, SACS hired a firm to see which building will most effectively house all of the students. The firm came to the conclusion that St. Stephen would host more students if over 700,000 dollars in improvements were made. Those improvements include the construction of a music room, cafeteria, a safer playground, a more efficient parking lot, and a new plan for the utility bill. Based on those recommendations, the board submitted their proposal to the Bishop. That proposal asserted that, since St. Thomas currently has an efficient cafeteria, parking lot, and band room it should be the building that remains open.

All final decisions regarding SACS will be made by Bishop Joseph Cistone who will choose based on all of the recommendations provided; as well as feedback from parents, benefactors and those invested in the success of Saginaw Area Catholic Schools. Currently, Bishop Cistone has not yet made any decision regarding this issue.
