2013 had its shining moments and its darker days which made us all cringe. So, lets delve in deeper and decide the best and worst of 2013

Top 5
5. Technologically advancements
2013 saw many new advances in space science to medical research and our iphones and gaming consoles. Some examples of these would be the BRAIN intiative which aims at finding better treatments for mental illness and better understanding of how our brains work. Another example is the launch of human trips to space which will be happening soon as well as new discoveries regarding.
mars.

4. Some of the best economic growth in years
Currently the GDP sits around 3.60 which is not great but is higher then it has been averaging since the recession and we have seen unemployment drop down to 7 percent which is the lowest in 5 years.

3. SCOTUS upholds pro life law in Texas
This important because it not only closes 1/3 of TX abortion clinics but also could set a new judicial precedent regarding this issue.

2. Nelson Mandela
Not that he died but that everyone got to look back at what a great man he was and how he changed the face of civil rights for the people of South Africa as well as inspired all of us throughout his life.

1. The election of Pope Francis
Pope Francis has changed the way many non-Catholics view the pope, as well as reenergizing those in the faith.  He has already launched himself into championing a variety of issues from ridding corruption from the church to focusing the churches efforts on helping the poor and sick.

Worst 5

5. Government Shutdown
Not only did this create the impression to other countries that we are a joke and petty but it also cost the economy 24 billion dollars as well as left 1 million people out of work.

4. Typhoon Haiyan
This devastated the Philippines and was responsible for many deaths and the destruction of survivors lives and livelihoods from their homes to businesses.

3. The Super Bowl
A 30 minute blackout not only completely changed the momentum of the game (and costing the Ravens the win) but it also killed the hype and appeal of the game in of itself.

2. Congress
55 public laws is the fewest amount of laws we have seen passed ever by a congress which earns this congress the title “A Do Nothing Congress.” This is not a one time thing though in the senate we have seen 425 filibusters over 6 years, 55 to 61 there was only 1 filibuster and we have also seen congress take us to the brink of global economic collapse by failing to raise the debt limit countless times.

1. Syrian Civil War
The choices here are millitant dictator Bashar Al Assad or terrorist rebels. I mean, this situation does not get much worse. Plus there is more on top of the two radical groups, we have seen countless innocents killed and millions of refugees stuck in the middle of no where. This worst will continue well beyond just this year…
